“I went to USC to become a filmmaker. I'm pursuing my graduate degree at San Diego State University to grow creative communities and expand access to quality arts education for the underserved communities that shaped me.”
My Story
I never planned on becoming a filmmaker.
Growing up in Barrio Logan, I was more interested in music, dance, and performing. I learned choreography from MTV music videos recorded on VHS and later became involved in breakdancing. In high school, a friend invited me to act and dance in one of his films, introducing me to storytelling in a way I had never experienced before.
I never knew attending a university was an option. Coming from a family where no one had attended college, higher education felt distant from the world I knew. After earning an Associate's degree in Film from Southwestern College, I thought I had gone as far as I could academically. Then a counselor introduced me to the idea of transferring to a university, a conversation that eventually led me to USC's School of Cinematic Arts.
The same week I received my acceptance letter, my father passed away. That collision of joy and grief changed the way I viewed time, purpose, and the importance of pursuing meaningful work. Years later, those experiences would inspire FUEGO and a larger mission centered around storytelling, culture, education, and community.
Today, I create films, events, and educational opportunities designed to help others discover what inspires them and pursue it with purpose.
Community & Education
Storytelling changed the direction of my life, and I believe creative education can do the same for others.
As a Teaching Assistant at San Diego State University and Teaching Artist with Media Arts Center San Diego, I have had the opportunity to mentor aspiring filmmakers and help students develop their creative voices through hands-on filmmaking, editing, and storytelling.
For the past several years, I have also worked with underserved youth, helping students create short films, submit work to film festivals, and gain confidence through creative expression. Many of these students had never considered filmmaking as a possibility for themselves until someone gave them the opportunity to try.
I am currently collaborating with the Barrio Logan College Institute and experimenting with online storytelling workshops as I continue exploring new ways to make creative education more accessible to underserved communities.
Whether through film production, workshops, community events, or classroom instruction, my goal remains the same: to create opportunities for people to learn, grow, and discover what inspires them. The work I do in education continues to influence projects like FUEGO and reinforces my commitment to building stronger creative communities through storytelling, culture, and mentorship.
